A step-by-step guide to setting up gamification through rewards and badges to increase course participant engagement.
In this article:
The Kwiga platform provides flexible tools for creating a personalized reward system, enabling you to combine automatic reward issuance with an individualized approach for each participant. With detailed customization options, you can create a unique motivation system tailored to your course’s specific needs and your audience’s requirements.
This guide will walk you through configuring every part of the reward system—from creating visual elements to setting up earning conditions and managing notifications. The result can be increased learner activity, better engagement, and clear progress in achieving learning goals.
Activating the Rewards System
The settings are available under the Courses → Gamification, Loyalty menu.
In the Rewards, Badges tab, you can create an effective incentive system for students. This feature makes each participant’s achievements visible and encourages active learning.
In the settings, enable the green toggle Use rewards and badges. This step activates the reward system for your students. Rewards and badges can be issued regardless of participant status or ranking.
The platform offers a flexible combination of automated reward issuance through automation settings and manual awarding for individual participants. The additional toggle, Allow manual editing expands reward management capabilities. When enabled, you can add rewards directly from the contact card.
This allows you to combine a systematic approach with personalized motivation.
Creating a Reward
To create a new reward, click the +Reward button.
Next, fill in the main fields for your reward. Start by adding an image in .jpg, .png, or .jpeg format using the Change button. You can add a link or select an image from your storage or computer that will serve as the visual symbol of the achievement.
Once the image is displayed, click Upload.
The next step is to add a title and description for the reward.
The reward description plays a key role in motivating students. Use it to clearly explain the reward’s meaning or what actions are needed to earn it. The more detailed and understandable the description, the better students will know what they’re working toward.
The Display of unearned rewards option lets you decide whether students can see the rewards they haven’t yet received.
When unearned rewards are displayed on the dashboard for all participants, it creates additional motivation to reach those goals. The Hide from everyone option makes unearned rewards invisible, which can be useful for adding an element of surprise.
Reward Issuance Conditions
You can set specific criteria by which the platform will automatically assign rewards to participants using the Add Condition button.
This could include actions like viewing the final lesson, completing a practical assignment in a specific year, opening an email, or any other activity on the platform.
There’s also an option to check the box Apply to existing contacts.
When this option is enabled, all contacts who already meet the specified condition will automatically receive the corresponding reward. After setting all parameters, don’t forget to save the condition.
Managing and Editing Rewards
Kwiga makes it easy to edit rewards after creation. You can change the earning conditions, update the description, or modify the image at any time.
During editing, the useful Reward Recipients tab shows a complete list of participants who have already received that particular reward.
To temporarily hide a reward, use the eye icon next to its name. This allows you to quickly control the visibility of rewards without fully deleting them. Once hiding is confirmed, the reward recalculation for contacts will begin.
Notification Settings
To ensure participants don’t miss the moment they receive a reward, notification settings are available.
The green toggle "Notify participant about receiving the reward" activates this feature. You can choose the notification delivery method: either send it through the platform's notification module or directly to the participant’s email address.
Display in the Participant’s Profile
All rewards are shown in the Achievements section of the participant’s dashboard.
Rewards that have not yet been earned appear with a lock icon, indicating they are attainable but not yet unlocked.
Once a participant earns a reward, the lock disappears and the reward becomes active. Clicking on it reveals a detailed description of the achievement.
This visual system motivates students to earn new rewards by showing them what’s still possible. It makes learning more engaging and encourages active participation.
