A homework assignment on the platform is a quiz that uses specific types of questions. To add a homework assignment, you need to first create a quiz, add open-ended questions to it, and then attach it to a lesson.

Flexible settings help adapt the assignments to the needs of the course. You can set a timer, configure grading, allow comments after review, and enable notifications about new responses. This makes the review process more efficient and ensures better feedback between the instructor and students.

Kwiga offers two main types of open-ended question assignments that can be used depending on the course’s needs:

  • LMS Assignment — a single block with one open-ended question and one response field.

LMS Assignment – a single block with one open-ended question and one response field. This format is convenient and universal: students can respond with text, record a voice message, attach a file, or even upload a video. This type of assignment is especially suitable when feedback is expected — it facilitates communication between the student and instructor in the comments after the review. It's often used for creative tasks where a detailed response is required — for example, writing an essay, attaching a document with calculations, uploading a presentation file, or submitting a training video.

  • Homework with Multiple Open-Ended Questions — a more flexible and structured format. Its main advantage is that it allows you to add several open-ended questions within a single assignment.

Just like the standard LMS assignment, students can respond with text, upload files, and record audio or video responses.

Each question in such an assignment is a separate section with its own response field, where an individual comment can be left after review. This is convenient when you need to provide detailed feedback on each point.

LMS Assignment (Single Question)

An LMS assignment contains only one question and one response field. This format is convenient, for example, for checking detailed answers to a specific task. To create it:

    1. Go to the Quizzes menu.

  1. Click+ Quiz and add the assignment title.

  1. Select the LMS Assignmenttype.

  1. Add a question and configure the answer format.

Answer settings:

Using the toggles, you can configure which types of answers are available to students.

Allow answer – if this option is enabled, the student can submit an answer in any format. If it is disabled, the task becomes purely theoretical or informational, and the student will not have a field to answer.

Allow public answers – if this option is enabled, students can leave public answers. This option is suitable when students' answers can be useful to everyone, for example, in creative tasks or discussions.

Allow text answers – the student can provide an answer in text format or as a link.

Allow audio answers – the student can record a voice message. The teacher or curator can also leave audio comments.

Allow video answers – the student can record a video message, which is a convenient option for tasks that require demonstrating skills or performing practical exercises. The main requirement is to grant the browser – access to the camera.

Allow file uploads – students can add documents, videos, or images, such as graphic works, presentations, etc.

Allow comments after grading – if this option is enabled, students can ask clarifying questions after the task has been graded. This promotes a deeper understanding of the material.

After submitting an answer, the student can no longer edit or delete it. Only the course curator can delete the answer. Using open-ended tasks on the Kwiga platform helps make learning more interactive, engaging students in dialogue and deeper processing of the material.

Homework with multiple open-ended questions

This format allows creating several open-ended questions within one assignment, which enables deeper assessment of students' knowledge and analysis of their answers.

To create it:

  1. Go to the Quizzes menu.

  1. Click + Quiz, add the assignment title, and select the type: Text, question, audio, or video answer.

  1. Add the first question and set up the answer format.

  1. Add the required number of questions similarly and configure them.

Answer settings:

Text answer – the student can provide a detailed written response.

Audio answer – recording a voice message, useful for language practice or oral explanation.

Video answer – the ability to provide a visual explanation or demonstrate skills.

File upload – students can upload documents, images, presentations, or code files.

Entering a date or email – if the answer requires clearly structured data.

This format allows teachers to create more complex and multi-component assignments, which promotes better understanding and mastery of the material.

How to set up a quiz with a homework assignment

More detailed information about all quiz settings can be found in a separate article. here we will focus on some that may be useful when creating homework assignments with open-ended answers.

You can configure how questions are displayed for assignments with the type Text, Question, Audio, or Video response: either all at once on one page or one by one. If you choose the latter option, you can allow or prohibit returning to previous questions.

To control time, you can enable a timer. It can function as a stopwatch or limit the time to complete the assignment. Participants will see how much time remains, and when it runs out, the quiz will automatically close and be marked as completed.

Another important setting is grading. You can decide whether points are awarded for answers, the maximum number of points, and whether the student can see them. You can also select the method of review: automatic or by a curator.

To make learning more interactive, it is possible to allow students to reply to curators’ comments. This is helpful when explanations or clarifications are needed after grading.

Notification settings for student responses

To receive notifications about submitted answers, you need to enable notifications in your profile settings.

First, open your profile in the top right corner of the screen.

Next, go to the section All Settings.

Find the Notifications tab.

Here you can enable receiving notifications via the platform bell or by email, and below choose which specific notifications to receive.

This helps to quickly respond to new answers and more effectively check completed assignments.

How to add an assignment to a lesson:

To add an assignment, you need to:

  1. Open the course and go to the Lessons tab.

  2. Open the Lesson Builder.

  3. Choose one of the ways to add assignments.

On the Kwiga platform, there are two ways to add practical assignments to a lesson: Practice and Practice List.

If the assignment is to be part of the lesson materials and completed during the lesson, select Practice. If you need to place the assignment on a separate page that the student will access via a link, use Practice List.

Both options allow adding open-ended questions, file uploads, audio and video responses, as well as setting up grading and review.

More details about adding assignments can be found in a separate article.
