How to create a unified design for all quizzes by setting colors, fonts, and buttons once and applying them to new assignments.
In this article:
Style templates are a convenient tool for creating a professional and consistent look for all your quizzes. They allow you to set colors, fonts, and button styles once and then quickly apply these settings to new assignments.
Thanks to flexible options, you can create both a basic universal template and specialized versions for different subjects or types of learning materials. Properly designed quizzes not only look more professional but also create a comfortable learning environment.
How to Create Style Templates for Quizzes
To work with style templates, go to the Quizzes menu and then click the Settings button on the platform. Here you can adjust existing templates, create new ones from scratch, select a default template, as well as copy and edit existing versions.
To add a new template, click the + button.
Important note: if you are satisfied with the current design and only need minor adjustments, you can copy a template and edit it.
Configuring the Color Scheme (Layout Tab)
In the first Layout tab, you can fine-tune typography and colors. For all text elements—quiz titles, questions, answers, statements, and question numbering—the same settings are available. Simply click on the current value of any parameter and choose the one you need: you can change the font size, its style, and color.
When choosing a color, you can use the available options, add your own by entering a color code in the format #000000, or use a color picker to select a shade from the palette.
Note: This is the so-called HEX color code—a six-digit code that precisely defines a shade. The first two digits correspond to red, the next two to green, and the last two to blue. For example, #FF0000 is red, #00FF00 is green, and #0000FF is blue. You can find the needed codes on special palette websites or in graphic editors.
You can also separately configure the color of answer blocks and the additional color of blocks to create accents in the design.
Answer block color determines the background for answer options in most question types: single choice, multiple choice, survey, Likert scale, fill-in-the-blanks, sorting, matching, sentence building, list, multi-list, word entry, word-building from letters, and text answer. This setting helps make answer options more noticeable and stylistically aligned with the overall quiz design.
Additional answer block color is used specifically for Matching questions. When the drag-and-drop option is enabled in the settings for this question type, additional blocks appear where answers can be dragged. This color setting applies to those blocks.
Configuring Buttons (Buttons Tab)
In the second Buttons tab, you can customize the appearance of buttons for two quiz display options: when each question is shown on a separate step, or when all questions are displayed on a single page.
The display mode of the quiz itself is set when it is created, while in the template you define the button styles for each of these options.
Within the template, you can configure the appearance of different buttons used in quizzes.
For example, the Next button is used to move between questions, and you can define its design and color. When the user reaches the final question, this button automatically changes to Finish Quiz.
The Finish Quiz button appears at the final stage and has its own style settings; you can also change its text and appearance.
In addition to button appearance, you can configure their placement on the page.
Separate positioning parameters are available for the desktop version and for mobile devices, allowing you to optimize quiz usability across different screen types.
Practical Tips for Creating Templates
To start, it is recommended to create a basic neutral template: dark gray for headings, black for questions, soft shades for answers, and standard blue for buttons. Such a template will work in most cases. Alternatively, you can use the default ready-made template.
If you work in an organization, it is worth creating a corporate template using the company’s brand colors and a consistent palette for all elements. This will help maintain a unified brand identity across all learning materials.
For specialized courses, you can design thematic templates with colors corresponding to the subject—for example, green shades for environmental classes, or blue tones for technology. The main rule is to maintain contrast for better readability and to use accent colors for key elements.
Applying Templates
After creating a template, you can set it as the default for all new quizzes. You can also apply a template to a specific quiz: to do this, open the quiz editor, click Settings, and go to the Design tab.
A template for an existing quiz can be changed at any time, and existing templates can be duplicated to create variations.
In addition, in the Quizzes menu, in the list of all quizzes, you can apply a template to multiple quizzes at once using the Bulk Actions feature.
If needed, the template can also be changed within an individual lesson. To do this, go into the product in the lesson builder and override the template directly in the practice section of that specific lesson.
With the Course Preview function, you can check how quizzes with the updated design will look inside the lesson.
Properly configured style templates significantly enhance the professional quality of your learning materials and ensure a comfortable experience for quiz participants.
