Sending Emails with Promo Codes (Unpaid Orders)

Articles:

Let’s explain how to set up email notifications with promo codes for customers who haven’t completed their payment. This type of mailing helps recover lost customers and increase conversion rates.

In this article:

Sending an email with a promo code (discount) to a customer who started the payment process but didn’t complete it is an effective way of "closing the deal" and boosting sales. This approach reminds the customer of the offer, motivates them to finish the purchase, and reduces the barrier to payment.

Sometimes, customers proceed to the payment page, begin the process, but for some reason, they don’t finish the purchase. This is a missed opportunity for the business, but it can be turned into an additional source of sales.

One effective way to recover such customers is by sending them a reminder email about the order and offering a discount. This approach stimulates the purchase, reduces potential objections, and increases conversion.

It’s important to set the timing for sending such emails correctly. If you send it too late, the customer might have forgotten about your offer or might purchase a similar product from a competitor. The optimal approach is to find a balance—give the customer time to make a decision but don’t miss the moment when they’re still interested.

In this article, we will explain how to track unpaid orders correctly and effectively use discount emails to increase sales.

Creating the List

To restrict the use of the coupon and make it available only to specific customers, you need to create a special list. This will help prevent the coupon from being shared with third parties.

To do this, first go to the “CRM” section in the top panel and select “Contact Lists.” Then, create a new static (regular) list. It should be empty and without using any filters.

The remaining steps are described in more detail in this article.

Creating a Promo Code

Now you need to create a coupon that will provide the desired discount.

To create it, go to the "Courses" section and under "SALES SETTINGS," select the "Discount Coupons" option.

After creating the coupon, it's important to specify which user group it will be available to.

To do this, in the "Assign to User Group" section, click and select "Add Group," then choose the group that was created earlier for the participants who will receive the discount.

Additionally, in the offer settings, you need to specify that coupons can be applied to it.

To do this, go to the offer settings and under the "Allow applying discount coupon" section, select the third option and specify the coupon you created.

It’s important to create a list of such customers and set up automation so that the coupon is available for only a limited time. The coupon itself does not need to have an expiration date, as it will automatically stop working when the customer is removed from the list after the specified time.

More details about creating coupons are covered in this article.

Creating the Email

You also need to create an email and add your coupon to it.

This email will be sent to the participant if they haven’t completed the payment for the offer.

To do this, go to the “Mailings” section and under "EMAILS," select the "Email Builder" option.

.
You define the text of the email with the coupon yourself, but we recommend including the following elements:

  • Coupon Name – so the customer immediately understands what offer is being referred to.

  • Discount Amount – this is a key factor that will motivate the customer to complete the purchase.

  • Expiration Date – specify that the coupon is active for, for example, X hours, to create a sense of urgency.

  • Price Without and With Discount – this will help the customer see the actual benefit.

A well-designed email with a valuable offer and clear terms will increase the likelihood that the customer will complete the purchase.

More detailed information on creating the email is covered in this article.

Creating Automation

Before proceeding with this step, we recommend reading the article on general automation information.

To create automation, go to the “Courses” section, and under "PROCESS SETTINGS," select the "Process Automation" option, then click on “+Scenario.”

To begin, in the "Event" section, select “Order → Unpaid Order (application)” and choose the relevant offer (the one the participant needs to pay for) in the "Select Order" field.

After that, set the delay to at least 10 minutes (but we recommend 30 minutes), as payments may not be processed immediately (this depends on the payment system), and the customer needs time to enter payment details and confirm the payment.

Next, in "Actions," choose “Contact list → Contact list: Add to list” and select the list you previously created.

Also, add a second “Action,” “Email mailing service → Email mailing service: Send email.”

The final setup should look like this:

Removing from the List

You can create an additional (optional) automation after this one.

This automation will remove a participant from the list eligible for the coupon after 24 hours if they haven’t completed the payment for the offer.

To do this, exit the created automation and, within the same automation, select “+ Trigger.”

You don't need to select an event for this trigger, as it will be activated by the action from the previous trigger within the current scenario.

For the delay, choose, for example, 24 hours or any other time period after which you want the participant to be removed from the list if they haven’t completed the payment.

After that, in "Action," select “Contact list → Contact list: Remove from list” and choose the relevant list.
